Seven things God Hates
Seven things God Hates
Matthew 15:19 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20 "These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man."
If we don’t allow God’s word to be our guide then we will quickly find ourselves coming up with all kind of ideas that will oppose Gods will making us become Gods enemy.
That is why it is imperative that we study Gods word and try to be Christians that a posses a pure heart.
Prov 6:16-19
16 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
1. A proud look (Proverbs 6:16-17)
Don’t look at others and hold yourself higher because you know more truths then they do, or because you have a gift that another does not. They could look at you the same way. We are not all the same.
Why does the Lord hate haughty eyes or a proud look? Because it presents a person as self-sufficient and not in need of God's grace or counsel
Pride is simply exaggerated and dishonest self-evaluation. It was the sin that began sin, when Satan said, “I will be like the most High God.”
Pride is number one on God’s hate list. “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look . . .” (Prov. 6:16 kjv). Proverbs hits the issue of pride hard.
“The Lord detests all the proud of heart” (Prov. 16:5).
“I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech” (Prov. 8:13).
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall” (Prov. 16:18).
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace” (Prov. 11:2).
If we summarize all the Old Testament proverbs, we could easily do it with one key verse from the New Testament: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).
2. A lying tongue (Proverbs 6:17)
Falsehood always implies a wrong heart. A pure heart supplies no motive for falsehood. Vanity, avarice or extreme greed for wealth or material gain, ambition, cowardice--are the parents and patrons of lies.
Falsehood always has a bad social tendency. It disappoints expectations, shakes confidence, loosens the very foundations of social order.
3. Hands that shed innocent blood (Proverbs 6:17)
The Lord hates this because it is out and out cruelty. Cruelty implies an utter lack of sympathy with God's creation..
Destroying innocent or blameless people by killing their will, their dignity, their gift given by God. By putting people down in these areas as harmless as this one may seem, it allows for worse things to come in.
(This led to Saul’s desire to kill David. It started out emotionally and then physically.) Saul was furious and resented this song. “They credited tens of thousands to David,” he complained, “but they only credited me with thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?” So Saul watched David jealousy from that day forward. The next day an evil spirit from God took control of Saul, and he began to rave inside the palace. — 1Samual 18:8-10
4. A heart that devises wicked imaginations (Proverbs 6:18)
"There are evil thoughts in all men's hearts; but the devising, fabricating of them, and thus making the heart into a devil's workshop, is the mark of utter depravity and wickedness, and is abhorrent to God. Though planned in secret, are clear to God 'to whom no secrets are hid.'
Speaking, thinking, wishing, spiteful, hurtful—by doing any of these only feeds the flesh.
We need to train our hearts to purposely practice kindness, gentleness, etc. (Galatians 5:22-23). Otherwise we move nowhere.
Though they intend to harm you and devise a wicked plan, they will not prevail. —Psalms 21:11
5. Feet that are swift in running to mischief (Proverbs 6:18)
The Lord hates this lifestyle because it implies more than falling or sliding into sin, which is common to all. These folks take delight in their unholy work; they have a greed for it as their feet pursue where their heart has already run.
Going to places you know God isn’t in the middle of: TV, books, friends, parties, drugs, excessive drinking. Instead of running to Him you run to something “evil” for comfort.
Take time to go to God and get right and then seek out what made you run, or want to run.
Finally be strengthened by the Lord and by His vast strength. Put on the armor of God so that you can stand against the tactics of the Devil. For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. — Ephesians 6: 10-13
6. A false witness who speaks lies (Proverbs 6:19)
This person robs his fellow creature of his greatest treasure--his own reputation and the loving confidence of his friends.
“Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn’t it to be put on a lampstand? For nothing is concealed except to be revealed, and nothing hidden except to come to light. If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!
7. Anyone who sows discord among brethren (Proverbs 6:19)
God created us for unity and togetherness. God hates when brothers spread strife or discord. Christians ought to be able to disagree without having a disagreeable lifestyle.
In God's Word we are commanded to
§ "love one another" (John 13:34-35).
§ "depend on one another" (Romans 12:5).
§ "honor one another" (Romans 12:10).
§ "rejoice and weep with one another." (Romans 12:15)
§ "admonish one another" (Romans 15:14)
§ "serve one another" (Galatians 5:13).
§ "forgive one another" (Ephesians 4:32)
§ "encourage one another" (1 Thess 5:11)
§ "bear one another's burdens" (Galatians 6:2)
By reading the New Testament it becomes obvious that God intends the church to be a SELF-LESS place. When congregations realize that, they enjoy a truly BLESSED fellowship. But when Christians are SELF-CENTERED-so often dissension is the result.
Conclusion
Now, if God hates these things in this passage (and He does!), then it stands to reason he loves just the opposite.
In other words, if God hates haughty eyes that means he loves the eyes of humility.
If God hates a lying tongue what does he love? A tongue of integrity.
If God hates those who shed innocent blood, he loves those who defend the innocent.
If he hates the heart that devises wicked schemes, how much more does he love the one who works towards virtue?
If God hates feet that rush to evil, how much does he love feet that run towards goodness?
If he hates a false witness, he must love a true witness!
If he hates those who sow discord, how much more does he love those who sow unity and peace?
At the end of the day, the Proverbs writer is asking us to consider:
What kind of people are we striving to be?
Do you find any of these detestable practices in your life?
We cannot change outward behavior until our hearts are changed.
